Bit tap from BAER - small but mighty!
Cordless drill screwdrivers were long regarded as toys for do-it-yourselfers and were not quite taken in their stride by craftsmen. And in fact, until some time ago, the devices simply lacked the power for more demanding work. But development has not stopped in this area either, and the torques of the little helpers are now really impressive.
As a result, cordless screwdrivers are being used more and more frequently in the professional sector. After all, the battery-powered design offers a number of advantages. No cable that is too short or quickly becomes a trip hazard. In addition, there is independence from the power grid. This provides much more freedom of movement and flexibility, even in unusual locations. Whether on the roof, in the shell of a building or in the great outdoors - the cordless screwdriver can be taken anywhere without the need for an extension cord.
So it's no wonder that cordless screwdrivers are also becoming increasingly popular for tapping. The devices make it particularly easy for beginners to get started and remove hurdles that would have prevented many a do-it-yourselfer from venturing into thread cutting in the past. The only problem? How does the screw tap, which comes standard in a square shank, fit into the cordless drill's chuck? One option would be to use an adapter. But there is also a direct way, which is much easier and faster. Because now you can also buy screw taps specifically for cordless screwdrivers. Thanks to their hexagonal shank, bit taps from BAER fit directly into the bit holder of your tool and are therefore unbeatably practical in use.
That's what makes a bit tap!
The central feature of the bit tap is its ¼ " hexagonal shank. This means that it can be easily clamped into any standard cordless drill and any hand drill. But beware, just because the bit tap fits in, it does not automatically mean that the device is also suitable for use. A few conditions must be met for safe use and cleanly cut threads. It is important that the torque can be freely adjusted. Also, your tool should be able to apply a power of at least 7.5 volts and work in clockwise and counterclockwise rotation. Although bit taps are specifically designed for use in the cordless drill or hand drill, they can also be used in manual tapping and stationary drilling machines.
Bit taps are suitable for through and blind holes of a depth of up to twice the nominal diameter. They can be used in materials with good machinability up to 900 N/mm² as well as in unalloyed and low-alloy steels. In addition to pure bit taps, there are also combination bit taps that can also drill a core hole in one work step.
For whom are bit taps suitable?
Bit taps are a wonderful alternative for many standard cases in your everyday life as a craftsman or DIYer. The uncomplicated application in combination with the great flexibility of battery-powered devices make bit taps unbeatable in terms of speed and convenience. Having a few versions of these inexpensive drills in your toolbox is always a good idea. You're sure to use them frequently and won't regret it if you decide to buy bit taps.
Like any flexible all-round tool, bit taps naturally reach their limits sooner or later - whenever you leave the scope of ordinary cutting cases. For unusual materials, deep blind holes or very large or very small thread diameters, you can still fall back on a large selection of threading tools specially designed for these purposes.
Correct use of screw taps for cordless screwdrivers: This is what you need to consider
To ensure that you enjoy your bit tap and the threads it produces for a long time, you should pay attention to a few points. It can be somewhat of a challenge to keep the device perpendicular. After all, unlike with a stationary drilling machine, this is literally in your own hands. So take your time when using your cordless drill tap, and make sure your cordless drill fits snugly in your hand before you start drilling. If you fail to keep the machine straight, then not only can the thread fail, but the bit tap can also break.
Also, make sure you have the correct settings on the machine. We recommend lowest speed settings (0 - 450 rpm) and maximum setting when it comes to torque. With the speed, you must be careful to also take the pitch once per turn of the tool. Otherwise, the bit tap may get jammed. This will overlap your thread or damage your screw tap for cordless screwdriver.
Wedging or snagging can also lead to further problems, since in this case the rotational movement is transferred to the entire device - which is, after all, in your hand. In the worst case, you can injure your wrist if you don't react in time and release the trigger. It is therefore best to use a cordless screwdriver with a slip clutch. This automatically switches off the drive in such a case and you don't have to worry.
In addition, of course, the usual instructions for use also remain valid for the bit tap. Choose the appropriate diameter for the core hole, use suitable Lubricant and wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying metal chips. If you follow these points, a bit tap will be a great addition to your workshop.
