When do you need special taps?

After all, you want to be able to rely on the fact that your screw from the hardware store also fits securely into your metric standard thread - even if the hardware store is located in France or you buy the screw again in five years. But standardization is always associated with a certain restriction. Otherwise, the already impressive range of thread standards and sizes would eventually become completely unmanageable. So the amount of common tap variations is finite and thus even with the widest assortment you will reach limits at some point.
