Bicycle Thread DIN 79012
The DIN 79012 bicycle thread is a thread type designed specifically for bicycles and mopeds. Since the invention of the bicycle predates international efforts to standardize threads, various thread types for bicycles have been established over time. The DIN 79012 bicycle thread attempts to address this confusion and simultaneously adapt thread geometry to the increased loads that modern bicycle threads are subjected to. However, not all threads on bicycles are actually DIN 79012 bicycle threads. This thread type is often used on fork steerer tubes and pedal axles, but other thread standards are also employed. Additionally, there are still country-specific variations. Therefore, when working on a bicycle, always be especially careful and, if in doubt, have the required thread determined by a specialist.
The DIN 79012 bicycle thread has a flank angle of 60°. The pitch is specified in threads per inch for the DIN 79012 bicycle thread.
The thread designation is derived from the abbreviation Fg and the external diameter in mm, e.g., Fg 7.9. Note that the decimal number is separated with a point rather than a comma.
The thread table for the DIN 79012 bicycle thread includes only ten different dimensions. In addition to the external diameter, the core hole diameter required for working with the bicycle thread is given. The pitch is listed in threads per inch and in metric conversion.
