BSPT Tapered Whitworth Pipe Thread (GB)
The tapered Whitworth pipe thread is a British pipe thread type that can be used to create sealing connections. BSPT stands for British Standard Pipe Tapered, with "tapered" indicating the conical shape. For a sealing connection, a conical external thread R is combined with a cylindrical internal thread Rp. The tapered Whitworth pipe thread is standardized according to ISO 7/1 or DIN EN 10226.
The tapered Whitworth pipe thread is an inch thread type with a 55° flank angle. The pitch is specified in threads per inch. The opening angle for the conical external thread R is 1° 47′ with a ratio of 1:16. Pitches and diameters are identical for both R and Rp threads.
For thread designation, the respective abbreviation is combined with an inch value in the form of R 1/4″ or Rp 1/4″. It is important to note that the designation R 1″ does not correspond to an external diameter of one inch. This is due to a characteristic shared by all pipe thread types. Since the thread designations refer to old, outdated pipe dimensions, they do not match the actual dimensions of the pipe thread.
From the thread table for the tapered Whitworth pipe thread, you can read the correct external diameter for R and Rp threads in inches and mm. The pitch is also given both in threads per inch and in metric conversion. If you want to cut a tapered Whitworth thread, you will also need the core hole diameter from the thread table.
